Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) – One of India’s leading institutes for fundamental research.
Given my interest in nanocatalysis, I interned with Professor Polshettiwar at the TIFR NanoCat Lab which focuses on CO2 reduction. I worked with 7 PhD students to synthesize DPC (black gold) and load different metals onto it. I gained valuable laboratory skills in synthesizing nanocatalysts and was introduced to various characterization methods for analysis such as Transmission Electron Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).
Furthermore, I conducted my own synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles and analyzed them under the SEM which exposed me to the precision required in sample preparation.
This experience excites me to learn more about such characterization and morphology at university – especially about the various uses of nanoparticles including, in environmental protection.
Intern, Indian Women Scientists’ Association (IWSA)
I was the youngest Intern at the National Science Teacher mentor workshop by IWSA where I set up and demonstrated experiments for teachers for example, the laser microscope experiment.
The exposure and engagement to lectures and experiments on Newton’s cradle, magnetic brakes, lasers – (double slit, double ball), catalysis, renewable energy by eminent scientists gave me the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts in a practical setting, fortifying my own knowledge and sparked my curiosity for further exploration in science.
I am establishing their first Science Museum by making working science models including, creating a Solar Smart School Bag. I am lobbying with prominent national newspaper, Indian Express to promote IWSA.
What IWSA said about me “ Zara is not only endowed with a great affinity toward science, but her involvement in social and community welfare are truly remarkable.”
